Leigh Anne MacCarthy of Monmouth has been named a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete in the sports of volleyball and cross-country.

MacCarthy, a senior at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande and a 2009 graduate of Central High School, helped the Eastern women's cross-country team finish 13th at the NAIA Cross-Country Championships at Fort Vancouver (Wash.) Historic Site Nov. 17. In her first season on the team, MacCarthy placed 68th (19:08) in the field.
On the volleyball court, MacCarthy played in 71 sets as a defensive specialist, tallying 129 digs for the season.
Student-athletes are nominated by their institution's head coach and must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status in order to qualify for the honor.
Two Polk County residents have returned for their sophomore seasons with the women's basketball team at Chemeketa Community College in Salem. Hannah Frederick, a 2011 graduate of Dallas High School, is a 5-foot-5 guard for the Storm. She scored a season-high 23 points in Chemeketa's Nov. 17 game against Umpqua Community College. Through the first 11 games, she was averaging 10.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals per outing. Her teammates include Kayla Cuellar, a 5-foot-11 forward and 2011 graduate of Central High School. Cuellar was averaging 8.4 points and 7.0 rebounds in five games played.
Josh Christenson of Dallas is a member of the 2012-13 wrestling team at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City. Christenson, a 2012 graduate of Dallas High School and three-time Class 5A state placer for the Dragons, is a freshman 165-pounder for the Cougars. In the Mike Clock Tournament Nov. 11, he finished with a 3-2 record.
Nicole Barton of Monmouth is back for her senior season with the women's basketball team at Linfield College in McMinnville. Barton, a 5-foot-9 guard/forward, played in 24 games for the Wildcats as a junior and averaged 2 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. So far this season, she has appeared in all six Linfield games, averaging 2.0 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.0 steals per contest. Barton is a 2009 graduate of Santiam Christian High School in Adair Village.
Two recent Central High School graduates are continuing their basketball playing days with the 2012-13 women's basketball team at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham. Briana Berg, a 2010 graduate of CHS, is a 5-foot-10 freshman forward for the Saints. Also on the squad is Chloe Waddell, a 5-foot-3 freshman guard and 2011 graduate of Central High.
Landon Hattan of Dallas is on the roster of the 2012-13 men's basketball team at Corban University in Salem. Hattan, a 2012 graduate of Dallas High, is expected to redshirt this season for the Warriors. He is a 6-foot-3, 180-pound guard.
Juli Peters of Independence is on the roster of the 2012-13 women's basketball team at New Hope Christian College in Eugene. She was also a member of the New Hope women's volleyball team in the fall. Peters is a 2012 graduate of Central High School.
Tyler Payne of Dallas is on the roster of the 2012-13 Southwestern Oregon Community College wrestling team in Coos Bay. Payne is a 2012 graduate of Dallas High School. He finished third in the 160-pound bracket at the 2012 Class 5A wrestling state championships.
Shallyn Lewis of Independence received Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges all-star honors in volleyball with her selection to the NWAACC South Region all-conference second team. Lewis, a 2010 graduate of Central High School, was a sophomore middle blocker for Chemeketa Community College of Salem. The Storm completed their season 4-6 in region play and 13-29 overall.
