Fire leaves five people homeless

MONMOUTH -- Five people were left homeless when a fire destroyed a home at 489 McDonald Lane in Monmouth Dec. 14.

The two-alarm fire broke about around 3:17 p.m.

Firefighters from Polk County Fire District No. 1 responded from engines from the Monmouth, Independence, Buena Vista, Suver Airlie and Pedee stations. FIrefighters from Dallas and S.W. Polk provided assistance.

Fire Captain Mike Rusher said two dogs were rescued. Although the fire was quickly brought under control by the 38 firefighters, the house is considered a total loss, Rusher.

Two families who were renting the residence were displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Rusher estimated the loss of the home and its contents to be about $200,000.
