DALLAS -- A resident in a home that burned June 30 has been arrested for arson in the first degree.

Alvin Patrick Swearingen, 36, lived at the home at 16790 Ellendale Road outside of Dallas with his mohter, brother and sister-in-law.

During the initial investigation it appeared that the fire had been set in two places within the home. A dog and cat were found dead in the fire, but neighbors, fire personnel and the sheriff's office deputies saved seven cats and three birds.

Dallas Fire Marshal Bill Hahn estimated the damage to be at least $70,000 and the house is uninhabitable currently.

Swearingen was arrested July 2 and is being held in the Polk County Jail on $25,000 bail.

The Sheriff's Office, Oregon State Police Arson Unit, State Fire Marshal's Office and Dallas Fire Department are still investigating the case. Anyone having information regarding the fire should contact Deputy Terra Duncan or Sgt. Nathan Goldberg at the Polk County Sheriff's Office at 503-623-9251.
