CYS football joins Willamette Valley League

The team now will play against teams from Dallas, Silverton, Cascade and Salem.

POLK COUNTY -- It won't be the same old game when the Central Youth Sports fifth- and sixth-grade football team hits the field in the fall.

This upcoming season, CYS will join the Willamette Valley Football League and will play games against teams from Cascade, Dallas, Silverton and Salem.

In the past, CYS had mainly played intrasquad games with maybe a game or two against another local squad thrown in.

"We're ready to step in and play in a regular league," Central head football coach Shane Hedrick said. "The No. 1 reason is that you're basically going to be playing a game under the rules of football instead of playing against your buddies from school. You'll get to play against teams you'll face in junior high and high school. Officials from the Salem Association will officiate the game, and we'll get to play at opposing sites, which is fun for the kids."

Registration for CYS football will be held from Aug. 13-16 in the CHS new gym from 11 a.m.-8:30 p.m. There will be no late registration this year. The cost is $75 per player.

The first practice will be on Aug. 19. The team will practice three days per week. The first game is Sept. 14.

Anyone interested in coaching should call coach Hedrick at 503-390-4469.
