Central hosts M-I Night Out

Smokey Bear plans to attend festivities

INDEPENDENCE -- National Night Out will be observed from 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, in the parking lot of Central High School.

People can get fitted for bike helmets and take part in a 911 simulation for children.

There will also be a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, small dog agility competition, dunk tank with local celebrities and visits from Smokey Bear and State Farm Insurance Good Neighbor Bear.

Representatives from the Monmouth and Independence public libraries will also be giving out awards for the summer reading program.

People interested in participating in the basketball tournament should call the Monmouth or Independence police departments to get applications or check in with the Monmouth Fitness Center.

The entire event is sponsored by the Monmouth and Independence police departments, Polk County Fire District No. 1 and Neighborhood Watch groups in each community.

National Night Out is a nationwide campaign designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, generate support and participation for local anticrime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.
