Guthrie Center hosts dance

DALLAS -- Guthrie Park Community Center will be holding a fun family event of country dance on Saturday, March 9, 7 p.m. The called dances include old time squares, big circles, longway sets, waltzes and others. No experience necessary, all ages welcome and all dances are taught.

The caller for the evening will be Alan Ede with music by the The Apperson's.

Admission is adults $4; kids 12 and under free; and families $15 (immediate family of 4 or more when kids are older than 12).

"Tongue of a Bird" at Pentacle

WEST SALEM -- The popular play "Tongue of a Bird" by Ellen McLaughlin, opens its second show of the 2002 season on Friday, March 8 at the Pentacle Theatre located at 324 52nd Avenue NW.

Production dates will run from Friday, March 8 to Saturday, March 30. The two Sunday matinees will be held on March 10 and 17.

Tickets are $11 ($12 for opening night) and may be purchased at the door, through the Pentacle Ticket Outlet, upstairs inside The Book Bin at 450 Court St. N.E. in Salem, or by calling 503-503-485-4300. Outlet tickets are subject to a service charge.

Annual Orchid Society show

WEST SALEM -- The Cherry City Orchid Society invites the community the annual Orchid Show and Sale.

"Picture This!" will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 9 and 10 at Capital Manor Auditorium and Community Center located at 1955 Dallas Highway N.W.

Admission is free.

Public entries will be accepted from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 8 and from 7 to 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 9.

Show hours are from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday March 10.

Sale hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 and from 10 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 10.

Pentacle auditions begin for next play

WEST SALEM -- An open audition for parts in the play, "Twilight of the Golds" by Jonathan Tolins, will begin promptly at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 at the Pentacle Theatre located at 324 52nd Avenue NW.

Actors needed are two men able to play late 20s to mid 30s; one man able to play mid 50s to mid 60s; one woman able to play late 20s to mid 30s; and one woman able to play early 50s to early 60s.

Every character in the play delivers at least one monologue. All auditioners will be required to read the monologues at the audition. Prepared monologues from this or any other play are welcomed and encouraged and they need not be memorized. The remainder of the audition process will consist of scene reading from the play with fellow auditioners.

Perusal copies of the scripts are available at the Pentacle Theatre office or by calling 503-364-7121.

If the 1 p.m. audition time can not be met, other audition arrangements can be made for an alternate, preferably earlier, audition date or time by calling the directors.

St. Patrick's Day dinner is March 16

INDEPENDENCE -- A St. Patrick's Day Celebration including a choice of dinner times, mass, dance and auctions will be held on Saturday, March 16 at St. Patrick's Church located at 1275 "E" St.

Dinners include corned beef, cabbage, red potatoes with soda bread and apple pie.

Day time meals will be offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cost is $9 for adults and $5 for children under age 10.

Mass begins at 5 p.m. and all are welcome!

The social hour and silent auction begin at 6 p.m.

The evening meal and oral auction will begin at 6:30 p.m. and are by reservation only.

Dinner is $15 for adults and $10 for children.

Music and dance with "Murphy's Law" begins at 7:30 p.m.
