State Ballot Measure 27 is the food labeling initiative on this November's ballot. It would require a label on foods containing genetically engineered (GE) ingredients, prepared with GE material or grown with GE ingredients. Dairy and meat products from animals given genetically engineered food, hormones or drugs would also need the label.
Food that has been greatly changed from its traditional form or that requires different preparation would also need a label detailing those changes. Food with gene transfers between species would need an explanation of the gene's source and why it was added.
For example, a squash label might read "This squash contains viral genetic information designed to make it resistant to viral infection."
