`A Christmas Carol' auditions being held

Local actors encouraged to get their Scrooge on

INDEPENDENCE -- Auditions are open for the Community Theater at Talmadge production of "A Christmas Carol."

Auditions will be held at the following times:

♦ 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8.

♦ 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9.

♦ 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10.

The production requires at least three male actors over the age of 40 and one young boy, age 6 to 9.

Between 20 and 25 actors and actresses of all ages are needed to round out the cast. No previous experience is necessary, but participants need to be able to rehearse eight to 10 hours per week for six to eight weeks.

There will be six performances in early December.

Director Bob Page is using a version of the story that was an annual tradition at Western Oregon University for more than 72 performances between 1986 and 1998.

"The dialogue remains true to the language of spirit of Dickens' story while being stripped of all excess and hyperbole," Page said.

Ensemble actors recite rather than sing their lines and a single actor may be called upon to play many roles.

Community Theater at Talmadge is an offshoot of Apple Box Children's Theatre.
