Western Days on course

Parades, fireworks, music acts and more on tap

INDEPENDENCE -- Western Days 2003 is coming together. Parades, fireworks, music acts, carnival rides, vendors and runners are all on the program.

Western Days' theme is "Honoring America's Heroes."

Monmouth-Independence Rotary Club members are overseeing the main parade starting on the Western Oregon University campus and moving all the way to Riverview Park in downtown Independence on the Fourth of July.

Brook's and Terry's will be sponsoring the kids' fun run at 6:30 p.m., July 3.

Entertainment in Riverview Park is tentatively arranged by Entertainment Commissioner Valerie Roe. The groups will be on stage from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday to Saturday.

The lineup is expected to include:

♦ JT and Turnout playing '60s, '70s and '80s rock on Thursday.

♦ The Gibsons playing Americana music (blend of pop and country) on the Fourth.

♦ A Christian band July 5.

The headline acts may be preceded with short sets by other groups.

There will be two separate children's parades on the 4th this year. Both stage at 10 a.m. and begin at 11:15. Lonni Nicoll and Cassie Kroeker are chairing the young people's parades.

The Monmouth parade forms on Monmouth Avenue at Western Oregon University and ends at Main Street Pizza on Main Street.

The Independence parade forms at Central High School and ends at Central Plaza. An entry blank for the parades is on page A6 in this week's Itemizer-Observer.

Twelve different carnival rides will be a featured in Riverview Park. Grace Sanner is working out details with Cascade Amusements.
