Dallas spikers struggle early

The team opens Pac-9 play with losses to Silverton and Forest Grove.

DALLAS -- Dallas' young volleyball team still is looking for its first league win of the season, but the Lady Dragons are getting closer all the time.

"We're getting better each game," coach Jon Petersen said after Dallas opened Pac-9 Conference play with losses to Silverton and Forest Grove. "We didn't play well against Silverton, and they're a good team. When you don't play well against a good team, you're going to get beat handily, and we did. We played better against Forest Grove. It only went three games, but we competed better."

Dallas played in the Grant Tournament on Sept. 6 in Portland. The Lady Dragons split six matches in pool play and then defeated Cleveland in their one match of bracket play.

Dallas will resume Pac-9 play on Sept. 11 at home against Newberg.

"Newberg's much better than they've been in the past," Petersen said. "They had been a little down the past few years. They're definitely one of the better teams in the league. They're going to be tough.

"We're still working on playing as as group because we have so many new team members. We've really stressed our serve-receive, and that has improved over the last two games. In the tournament we did a really good job with that. Now we need to improve on our hitting."
