Cities, county adopt hazardous waste plans

Residents will see increase in garbage rates

POLK COUNTY -- Governments in Polk County and its main cities have agreed to begin collecting money to get rid of household hazardous waste.

Starting May 1, Independence, Polk County, Monmouth, Dallas and West Salem residents will see a 25-cent charge on their monthly garbage bills to pay for waste collection events two or three times per year. Wastes could include old pesticides, automotive fluids and other toxic substances that might be found around the house and garage.

Waste collections would start as early as spring 2005, said Polk County Community Development Director Gene Clemens. The waste disposal facility, located in Marion County, likely will open by May 2005, he said.

Polk County officials bought a truck to handle waste collections. They still need equipment for the truck and to control spills and protect safety during collections, Clemens said.

Single-family homes, including manufactured homes, will pay 25 cents per month. Multifamily containers will be charged at $1.40 per cubic yard.
