Dallas High School is holding a free youth baseball clinic.

Safeway is offering an easy and painless way for people to help Dallas High School athletics through the current budget crunch

. The Dallas Booster Club is selling gift cards that can be used to make purchases at any Safeway in Oregon. Each gift card is $50 and is good for $50 worth of products at Safeway. The Dallas athletic department then will receive a five percent return on all purchases made with the gift card. There is no additional cost to the consumer. Central fans can help support the school's athletic department through the Panther Scrip program

. Scrip is substitute money that can be used to make purchases at dozens of participating retailers, such as Applebee's, Best Buy, Pep Boys and Shell Gas. A specified portion of the purchase amount -- ranging from 2 percent to 25 percent, depending on the merchant -- then will be donated back to the Central athletic department. There is no additional charge to the consumer, but scrip must be purchased before shopping. Kids, Inc. and the Dallas High School baseball program will host a free baseball clinic on Feb. 26 and March 5

. Ages 7-11 are eligible for the clinic, which lasts from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. both days. The first day will be devoted to defense. Offense will be the focus on the second day. Dallas High coaches and players will serve as instructors.

The Salem Baseball Umpires Association is seeking new umpires for the 2005 baseball season

. The SBUA provides training and Oregon State Certification for high school baseball. Registration for Central Youth Sports softball and baseball begins Feb. 23 in the CYS office.

Tryouts for baseball's rookie, minor and major leagues (ages 7-12) will be on March 12 in the old gym at Central High. Softball tryouts will be March 23 at Talmadge Middle School. There also will be a T-ball league for ages 4-6. Coaches clinics will be held on Feb. 20 and March 6. Volunteers are needed to help with registration, coaching, field maintenance and concessions. Registration is underway for Dallas Kids, Inc. baseball and softball

. Registration will be the Kids, Inc. office on Thursday, Feb. 17 from 6:30-8:30 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 19 from 9 a.m.-noon and March 5 from 10 a.m.-noon. Baseball fees are $50 for players in T-ball (ages 5-6) and rookie (7-8) leagues, $60 for players in minor (9-10) and major (11-12) leagues and $110 for JBO (13-14). There is a $120 faminly maximum for T-ball, rookie, minor and major leagues only. Softball fees are $50 for T-ball (ages 5-6) and 8-and-under (7-8), $60 for 10-and-under (9-10) and 12-and-under (11-12) and $75 for 14-and-under (13-14).

Special Olympics has started a basketball program based at Central High School

. Practices are being held from 10 a.m.-noon on Saturdays in the CHS gym. There are three different teams for varying levels of competition. The Dallas Kids, Inc. softball program is recruiting individuals for several positions

. Volunteer coordinators are needed for 10-under, 12-under and 14-under recreational leagues. A volunteer coach is needed for the 12-under Magic competitive team. A Masters swimming team at the Dallas Aquatic Center is accepting new members

. The annual fee is $25 with a $6 discount for Aquatic Center members. The team is open to swimmers of all ability levels, 19-and-older. Participants are not required to swim competitively, but that option is available. Practices are set from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, but team members also can set their own practice times. Western Oregon is hosting softball pitching camps from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. on Feb. 20 and Feb. 27

. The cost is $20 for a one-hour session or $100 for six one-hour sessions. The camps will be held in the new Physical Education building. The Dallas Booster Club is hosting a Coach's Corner at 7 p.m. on each Monday at the Dallas Aquatic Center

. Seasonal head coaches for the Dragons will come in on a rotating basis to talk about their programs and athletes and answer questions. Wrestling coach Tony Olliff is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 14. He will be followed by girls basketball coach Rory Lassetter (Feb. 21) and boys basketball coach Gary Burks (Feb. 28).

Dallas Kids, Inc. is looking for a coordinator for individuals leagues for the 2005 baseball season
