DALLAS -- If Oakdale Heights Elementary students are offered a penny for their thoughts, they'll probably take it.
In fact, they may have been doing a lot of thinking lately as their penny drive to benefit victims of hurricane Katrina brought in $1,038-that's 103,800 pennies.
Mrs. Jones' first grade class topped them all with $151 or 15,100 pennies. For that effort the class won the Oakdale Spirit Stick.
Principal Vickie Boer said "Students literally came with piggy banks in hand to reach out and help others. We are very proud of the results."
In addition, she was pleased to report that Oakdale students assembled 50 backpacks as part of the National Guard Backpack Project for students affected by the hurricane.
The principal credited her student teachers from Western Oregon University with doing "a great job of organizing the project."
