SALEM -- "A Gift of Time," a program for unpaid family caregivers of adults, will be held Saturday, Sept. 23, at First Christian Church, 685 Marion St.
The event is designed to provide caregivers with educational seminars and a chance to network with others in similar situations, all in a relaxed setting. They will learn ways to take care of themselves emotionally and physically as they care for others.
The program was put together by a consortium of community organizations in Polk and Marion counties, including Alzheimer's Network of Oregon, Mid-Willamette Valley Hospice, Lifespan Respite, Marion-Polk Parish Nurse Program, Harris and Associates, Oregon AARP. Individual family caregivers are volunteering their time as well.
The organizers say their objectives include educating and training family caregivers; providing information on the necessity for caregivers to take care of themselves; reducing stress and increasing coping skills; and discussing the legal and financial environment for family caregivers.
In an attempt to provide caregivers with a day of respite, activities will include entertaining speakers, exhibits, arts and crafts, and massages.
The cost for the full day, including three meals, is $20. Full fee waivers and free transportation are available in Marion and Polk counties with registrations made by Thursday, Aug. 31. For more information: Janice at 503-831-5593.
