MONMOUTH _ Officials of Polk County Fire District No. 1 said a grass fire that scorched a field at 8895 Hoffman Road, Sunday, July 16 was started in a combine grain tank.
Nobody was injured and no equipment was damaged. The property and the combine are owned by Bob Cook of Independence.
Fire Marshal Jason Cane said the combine was harvesting grass seed and released a hot ember onto the field.
Polk No. 1 received a call at 5:19 p.m. from a passing motorist. Winds turned a half-acre burn into a four-acre burn, Cane said.
The combine operator moved the machine to a safe distance by the time firefighters arrived. It took about 30 minutes to knock down the flames and mop up hot spots, Cane said.
Smoke drifting across Hoffman Road forced officials to shut down traffic a quarter mile from Highway 99W.
The fire burned about $1,500 in grass that had been processed for seed, Cane said.
