INDEPENDENCE _ A damaged natural gas line forced officials to halt traffic for four hours on Highway 51 near Independence on July 13.
Contractors digging on the west side of N. Main Street punctured a high pressure mainline at about 1:30 p.m., said Valerie White, a spokeswoman for NW Natural Gas.
The accident interrupted service to 12 commercial customers and forced work crews to detour northbound traffic until almost 6 p.m.
The southbound lane of the highway between Hannah Road and Polk Street will be closed between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, until the project is completed next spring.
No injuries or damages (other than the cut line) were reported. NW Natural Gas officials are investigating the incident, White said.
