WOU's Waechter named to All-America team

The junior right-hander posted a 12-0 record for the baseball team.

MONMOUTH -- Western Oregon junior pitcher Nick Waechter recently was named to the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division II All-American second team.

The right-hander, who helped the Wolves to a 40-16 record and a sixth straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship, was selected earlier this month as the West Region pitcher of the year by the ABCA and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Waechter is program's first player ever selected to the ABCA squad since the Wolves moved to the NCAA Division II level in 2002.

Catcher Greg McCarthy was a second-team All-American pick last spring in the NCBWA listing. The 2006 version of that All-American team will be released later this week.

Waechter was 12-0 this year with a 2.36 earned-run average in 95.1 innings. He struck out 85 batters and walked 21. Opponents batted a region-low .223 against him.

The Roseburg native is expected to be selected in this week's major league baseball amateur draft.
