DALLAS -- Chelsea Wiens of Dallas finished second overall Oct. 4 in a cross country meet at West Albany.
Wiens had the lead for much of the race but was passed near the end by Cassie Anderson of West Albany. Anderson won with a time of 19:58, and Wiens finished in 20:04.
"Chelsea had the lead the whole race and lost it in the last 600 meters," Dallas coach Monique Lankheet said. "The West Albany runner tucked in behind her. Every time Chelsea tried to shake her, the West Albany girl would respond and close the gap. It was very intense. Chelsea handled the pressure very well."
West Albany won the girls team competition with 25 points and was followed by Silverton (49), South Albany (69) and Dallas (76).
Dakota Magden finished 11th for the Lady Dragons with a 23:24 clocking. Emily Buchan ran a 25:50 and finished 19th. Other Dallas finishers were Maria Thackeray (21st, 26:12) and Amanda Bruesch (23rd, 26:25).
The Dallas boys finished third with 57 points. Silverton's boys won with 26 points, and West Albany was second with 44. South Albany did not have a complete squad.
Joe Crawford of Dallas ran third overall in 17:38. Nate Anderson finished in 18:19 and took seventh place. Also running for the Dragons were Ty Tietjen (18th, 19:05), Brian Woitte (20th, 19:24), Guaje Rush (23rd, 19:42) and Steven Austin (24th, 20:20).
"The team gave it their all," Lankheet said. "I liked how they competed. We had a tough week of workouts, and everyone was pretty tired. On top of that, several team members are suffering from illness and injury. But we are coming around and hope to improve our performance next Wednesday in Corvallis."
