Birders Eye Fall Counts

Birders across the country will be taking a census of birds in their area in mid-September as part of the annual fall migration count.

Birders across the country will be taking a census of birds in their area in mid-September as part of the annual fall migration count.

Local residents are invited to join Salem Audubon Society members in the event. Individuals may join a team and spend the day in the field with a small group, or may choose to count the birds in their yard or at their feeders.

In Polk County, the count will be on Sunday, Sept. 17. In Marion County, it will be Saturday, Sept. 16. People may choose to participate in either one or both counts

The event is similar to the annual Christmas Bird Count, except that the migration count tallies birds by county, while the Christmas count is limited to a 15-mile diameter circle.

The counts provide valuable information on the distribution and population density of bird species across the country.
