POLK COUNTY -- The Polk CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) has is recruiting new members for 2007.
Training courses will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 7, 14, and 21 at Polk County Fire District No. 1's Central Station in Independence.
Citizens ages 16 or older who live or work in Polk County may attend this training for free. Space is limited to 30 and will be first come, first served.
They will attend classes on disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, team organization, disaster psychology, and terrorism.
There will be "hands-on" practical training in addition to classroom exercises.
CERT members will also be assigned to one of several teams located in Monmouth, Independence, or Dallas. These teams will be contacted during emergencies to assist police or fire Departments if needed.
Participants who complete the 24-hour training course will be issued basic CERT supplies such as helmet, goggles, gloves, vest, flashlight and backpack.
