DALLAS -- Wendell T. Harness of Dallas has been interested in computers ever since they first appeared on the scene.
He worked for 20 years as a professional land surveyor, following in the footsteps of his dad, Darrell Harness. During all that time, though, the younger Harness never gave up the idea he someday would get into the computer business fulltime.
The day arrived a little more than a month ago when Harness started operating DynaWerx web services out of his Dallas home.
"I've been involved with computers ever since I was a little kid," Harness said. "I started programming in Basic on an Atari 400, a little gaming console. In the late '80s I started getting involved with online bulletin board systems and that kind of thing. I've basically been online ever since.
"From 1986 to 2006, I was a professional land surveyor. But I kept up with the computer stuff on the side and on the weekends. It was all self-taught. It's something I always wanted to do," he said.
"I kind of fell into surveying because my dad was a surveyor. But I never lost the dream. I kept teaching myself and learning."
DynaWerx offers a wide range of services, from web design and site hosting to search engine design and logo design. Harness also recently began offering in-home setup and repair, virus removal and upgrades.
"It's going pretty good," Harness said of his work, which is long-distance. "I don't really have any Dallas-based clients. I do a lot of work for clients all over the world. I'm working with people from the U.K., France, The Netherlands and a few other areas.
"I stay involved online. I participate actively in forums. They find me that way and link to my web site. I also see a lot of people coming from Google."
