POLK COUNTY -- Polk County commissioners recently held bid hearings on road resurfacing and improvements for the 35 roads earmarked for work under a road bond approved by voters last fall.
In all, the repairs will top out at more than $10 million. However, 12 different contractors who put in bids for the various roads came in well under the engineer's estimated costs.
"We are tickled about that," Commissioner Mike Propes said.
A repair schedule won't be set until the lowest bids are confirmed and the contracts are signed.
However, the roads due for repair are: Harmony Road, Red Prairie Road, Perrydale Road, North Perrydale Road, West Perrydale Road, Bethel Road, Broadmead Road, Ballston Road, Dejong Road, Enterprise Road, Mill Creek Road, Hopewell Road, Zena Road, Riverbend Road, Spring Valley Road, Brush College Road, Michigan City Road, Orchard Heights Road, Orchard Heights Place, Bethel Heights Road (North), Bethel Heights Road (South), Valley Creek Road, 4-H Road, Eagle Crest Road (North end), Gibson Road, Eagle Crest Road (South end), Deepwood Road, Briarwood Street, Lincoln Road, Airlie Road, Elkins Road, Maple Grove Road, Maxfield Creek Road, Berry Creek Road, and Bridgeport and Liberty Road.
Polk County has more than 500 miles of roadway to maintain, more than half of it unpaved. The road bond was passed as a maintenance measure to keep the county's roads in reasonable condition for another decade.
The commissioners and county officials campaigned hard for its passage last year. They were concerned that if the bond didn't pass, road repairs would become even more expensive and in some cases impossible to pay for in the future.
