INDEPENDENCE -- The annual Monmouth-Independence cleanup and beautification day will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at Riverview Park.

Residents are encouraged to bring their refuse to the park, which may include trash, wood, metals and tires. No paint, chemicals, cement or household garbage, please.

Cost is $5 for Monmouth-Independence residents and $10 for other Polk County residents.

The event will be held in conjunction with a statewide "Down by the Riverside Cleanup" day. Monmouth-Independence residents are encouraged to show support by beautifying their own property and volunteering for the community cleanup.

Projects include park restoration, riverbank cleanup, and downtown and roadway beautification. Lunch will be provided for all volunteers assisting with those projects.

Elderly and disabled citizens requiring assistance with transportation of debris are asked to contact the independence or Monmouth Police department by May 18 to schedule pickup assistance.

Additionally, Johnny's Auto Wreckers has agreed to pick up abandoned and junked vehicles. Citizens are asked to call Johnny's ahead of time at 503-838-0060 to make arrangements.

Individuals or groups wishing to volunteer for the Monmouth-Independence cleanup activities, can contact Independence Sgt. Pete Roy at 503-606-4910, or Monmouth Sgt. Justin Jones at 503-838-1109.
