POLK COUNTY -- Leonard Lee Spangler, 63, of Dallas died on Oct. 28 from injuries sustained in a late-afternoon single-vehicle crash on Highway 223 south of Dallas. Oregon State Police officers investigating the crash believe that an unidentified vehicle may have been a contributing factor to the crash.
At about 5:45 p.m. Spangler apparently lost control of his 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer while northbound on Highway 223 near milepost 10. The vehicle flipped several times and came to rest off the east side of the highway.
Police said Spangler was not using a seatbelt and was ejected from the SUV. He was transported by REACH air ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland with critical injuries, and died later in the evening.
Passenger Jon Spangler, 19, of Monmouth was using safety restraints and received non-life threatening injuries. He was transported by ambulance to Salem Hospital.
Preliminary information provided to investigators is that a southbound vehicle may have crossed into the northbound lane prior to the victim losing control. OSP has no make, model or color information on that vehicle.
OSP is continuing the investigation. Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to contact OSP Northern Command Center dispatch at 800-452-7888.
