MONMOUTH/INDEPENDENCE -- Local firefighters pulled in $8,888 during a "Fill the Boot" community fund raiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association last month.
Firefighters from Polk County Fire District No.1 worked with members of Polk County Professional Firefighters (IAFF Local 4196) in the second annual event. They braved the heat and traffic at the corner of Hwy 99W and East Main Street in Monmouth on Aug. 30-31, asking passing motorists to donate to MDA by dropping money into their workboots.
Polk No. 1 and Local 4916 far exceeded their goal of $6,000, raising $8,888 for research into neuromuscular diseases as well as to send children affected by these diseases to summer camp.
"We are so fortunate to live in such a generous community," firefighter Chris Paulsen said. "I talked with motorists who had friends and family affected by different forms of muscular dystrophy. "These towns really pulled through."
Paulson and Ben Stange, also of Polk No. 1, presented a check to MDA on behalf of the fire district and firefighter's union.
