MONMOUTH - Monmouth Police Department named Isaiah Haines as Officer of the Year at its annual awards banquet this month.

Haines, who was hired in 2005, also received an Oregon Police Officer's Association Life Saving Award for his actions on a call involving a suicide attempt in January 2007.

Haines talked to a knife-brandishing subject for more than 30 minutes to establish rapport. The subject threw the knife away and ultimately received help from Polk County Mental Health.

Haines was also voted the department's "Top Shooter" last year.

Mike Strack received the Reserve Officer of the Year Award. He started in December 2006 and was hired full-time last October.
