Independence Pedestrian Safety Laws Emphasized

INDEPENDENCE -- The Independence Police Department will conduct pedestrian safety operations Sept. 1-5 at various crosswalks around and along school routes.

INDEPENDENCE -- The Independence Police Department will conduct pedestrian safety operations Sept. 1-5 at various crosswalks around and along school routes.

The purpose is to raise awareness of pedestrian safety issues and provide education and enforcement regarding Oregon's pedestrian laws.

Drivers must stop and remain stopped for pedestrians until they have cleared the lane in which they are traveling (or into which you are turning) and the next lane.

Drivers are also prohibited from passing another vehicle stopped at a crosswalk.

Violation of the state's pedestrian law carries a $242 fine.
