DALLAS -- Students at Oakdale Heights Elementary were in a schoolwide lockdown for 15 minutes Dec. 10 after a custodian reported hearing five or six gun shots.
Principal Caleb Harris said a custodian reported the gun shots near the school at 2:20 p.m.
Assistant Superintendent Dennis Engle said hearing shots is not uncommon around Oakdale as it is near local farms that sometimes put down animals with gun shots. Neighbors typically call and notify the school if they will be shooting. However, Engle said these shots were different.
"They are up there on the edge of the city," Engle said. "However the direction and location they came from and the number was a little unusual."
The police department was contacted and no threat was found after the investigation, Engle said. The police believe it may have been someone shooting at a target. At 2:50 p.m., students were dismissed.
