Central boys swim past Philomath

Everyone was glad to be indoors for this one.

MONMOUTH -- It was quite chilly outside but warm enough inside Dec. 13 at Western Oregon's Wolverton Pool as the Central swim team split with visiting Philomath.

Central's boys ruled the day 159-120 while the Warriors were tops on the girls' side by a count of 142-116.

"The meet went as expected," CHS coach Teresa Tolzmann said. "We had some great performances by new swimmers Jordan Huffman and Robert Berry. Both of them also contributed to the success of our relays. Some of our swimmers still are getting into swimming shape, but I continue to be pleased with their performances.

"We have a big invitational Friday at Newport. I hope the weather will allow us to go."

Ian Pryce, Robert Barlow, Steve Hill and Kent Tolzmann of Central's won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.97.

Pryce, Hill and Tolzmann were joined by Zack McClure in 400 freestyle relay. They finished first in 3:48.88.

Hill won the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.71 and the 100 butterfly in a personal-best 1:04.65.

Berry was second in 1:18.04 in the 100 breaststroke, knocking about four seconds off his previous best time.

Tolzmann swam first in the 50 freestyle in 24.40 and was the runnerup in the 200 freestyle with a 2:08.73 clocking.

Pryce knocked more than six seconds off his time in the 200 individual medley, taking first in 2:30.80. He also swam a 56.83 for second in the 100 freestyle.

McClure won the 500 freestyle in 6:05.57 and was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:08.59. Both times were personal bests .

LeighAnne MacCarthy, Huffman, Taylor Hoffman and Katrina Hill posted a 4:52.28 for first place in the 400 freestyle relay.

Hill netted first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:06.31 and was second in the 200 freestyle in 2:29.93.

MacCarthy took first in the 200 individual medley in 2:54.00 and was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:22.49.

Amy Udell won the 50 freestyle with a personal-best clocking of 34.09. Linzi Wallace took second in 39.44.
