Happy New Year, Polk County!
After more than 30 days of getting my feet wet here at the Itemizer-Observer, I believe a more formal introduction is long overdue.
My name is Kurt Holland and I am the new managing editor at the I-O. I am replacing Marc Faulconer, who is leaving the area to rejoin his wife, Michele, who recently started a new career as a registered nurse in Madras.
This newspaper has made big strides during the past three years under Marc, most notably in its layout, design and packaging of the news product. We will continue to build on the strong foundation Marc has put in place.
My entire professional career, nearly 20 years of it, has been spent in the newspaper industry as a writer, reporter and editor. I believe that newspapers still have an important role in our society despite the rapid advances in technology that some feel will eventually make them obsolete. I strongly believe in community journalism and the role a newspaper plays in its local community. We are here to inform, educate and entertain.
When change occurs, there is always some apprehension. I, as the new managing editor, don't plan, nor do I expect, any major changes to your newspaper anytime soon. Sure, there will be minor changes in the days, weeks and months ahead as we strive to continually improve our product. My main goal is to work with the staff here at the I-O to make this the best newspaper we possibly can and make it relevant to the communities in which we serve.
And that's where you, our readers and advertisers, come in.
I'd love to hear from you. If you have any thoughts on the newspaper, please share them with me. I'd like to hear from regular readers and non-readers, from longtime area residents to newcomers. What do you like and dislike about the I-O? Are there things you'd like to see us do differently? Is there local subject matter we should cover more or less of? Do you have ideas that might make for possible stories in the paper? Let me know what you think. While I can't promise we'll use your story idea or make a specific change you want to see, I will read every comment submitted.
So as to not jam the phone lines here at the office, the best way to contact me is via e-mail: email@example.com. You may also drop a note in the mail to: Kurt Holland, Polk County Itemizer-Observer, P.O. Box 108, Dallas, OR 97338.
I look forward to hearing from you.
