Voters to pick mayor, councilors

In Monmouth and Independence



MONMOUTH/INDEPENDENCE -- Residents of Monmouth and Independence interested in running for an elected position in his or her respective city has until 5 p.m. on Aug. 26 to file for candidacy.

Applications can be turned in any time in both towns before then.

The position of mayor and four city council seats are open in Monmouth. The mayor's term is two years. Councilors are elected to four-year terms. All terms begin on Jan. 1, 2009.

The three council candidates with the most votes will serve four-year terms, while the fourth place finisher will fill out the remaining two years of a spot vacated earlier this year.

Applicants must be registered Oregon voters and have lived in Monmouth for the 12 months prior to the Nov. 4 election.

Candidates must also file a prospective petition, register a campaign committee and collect 20 valid signatures from local voters.

After the signatures have been verified by the Polk County Clerk, applicants must return the petitions to the Monmouth City Recorder for inclusion on the ballot.

The mayor's seat and city council positions 3, 5 and 6 are up for grabs in Independence.

The mayor's term lasts two years, and the councilors four. All terms begin on Jan. 1, 2009.

Applicants must be registered Oregon voters and have lived in Independence for the 12 months preceding the Nov. 4 election.

They must also file a prospective petition, register a campaign committee and collect 24 valid signatures from registered local voters.

After the signatures have been verified by the Polk County Clerk, applicants must return the signatures and perfected petitions to the Independence City Recorder for inclusion on the ballot.
