MONMOUTH -- Western Oregon University's American Sign Language/English interpreting program has been selected the recipient of the Sorenson VRS (SVRS) Interpreter Education Program (IEP) Award of Excellence
WOU was notified of the award last month.
The honor recognizes WOU's effort to respond to the needs of the deaf community by strengthening programs and incorporating VRS tracks into its curriculum.
Western was awarded $10,000 for curriculum and training to strengthen its existing and new programs.
"WOU will use the award funds to research entry-level interpreter readiness," noted Elisa Maroney, coordinator of WOU's ASL/English interpreting program. "Research findings will inform faculty so that evidence-based changes to our curriculum and programs may be implemented."
