WEST SALEM -- A transient was arrested on two counts of unlawful manufacture of methamphetamine and unlawful possession of meth waste Oct. 22 at Wallace Marine Park.
According to a release from the Salem Police Department, the department's Downtown Enforcement Team was sweeping the area around the park that day and located materials used to make meth inside two backpacks. The transient, 49-year-old Charles Best, was contacted at the scene and after questioning police believed he may have been involved with the backpacks.
Police also believed Best to be involved in a similar situation at Minto Brown Park involving a cooler full of meth-producing materials Oct. 16.
In both incidents, meth was not being actively produced at either time.
These two meth labs are the only ones that have been located in the Salem area in 2008.
