POLK COUNTY -- Pedestrian safety operations will be taking place in Dallas and Independence this month.
Dallas Police Department has planned another event from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, Aug. 14, at the intersection of Main and Academy streets in downtown Dallas.
The second is scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, Aug. 21, at the intersection of Southwest Levens Street and Rainbow Avenue.
Signs will be posted at the respective intersections the day prior to each event to remind motorists.
The Independence Police Department will also conduct an operation on Friday, Aug. 14, from noon to 4 p.m. at the intersections of Monmouth and 7th streets, and Polk and Main streets.
Oregon's "stop and stay stopped law" requires motorists to stop and remain stopped for a pedestrian in a crosswalk -- both marked and unmarked. The motorist must remain stopped until the pedestrian has cleared the lane in which they are traveling (or into which you are turning) and the next lane.
Oregon law also prohibits drivers from passing another vehicle stopped at a crosswalk.
Violation of Oregon's pedestrian laws is a Class B traffic infraction and carries a $242 fine.
