POLK COUNTY -- Polk County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is seeking members interested in joining community teams in Dallas, Monmouth and Independence.

New member training is scheduled for Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning Jan. 26 and continuing through March 16. The training takes place at the Polk County Fire District No. 1 facility, 1800 Monmouth St., Independence. All training materials and equipment is free.

CERT is a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) program administered locally by the Independence Police Department. Members receive training in first aid, light search and rescue, fire suppression, traffic control and more -- skills that would be important immediately after a natural or manmade disaster.

Teams meet regularly during the year to refresh training and assist fire and police agencies during local community events, disaster planning and practice exercises.

Additional training sessions are planned for the spring and fall.
