Stand-down set to help vets get needed services

DALLAS -- Serving Our Veterans at Home, a local veterans' group, will be hosting a one-day veterans' stand-down event at the old pool area of Dallas City Park on Sept. 19.

Stand downs help the Department of Veterans Affairs offer food, shelter, clothing, health screenings, VA and Social Security benefits and referrals to other services to vets.

The event will be open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

SOVAH organizer Bill Adams said the benefit of holding the event in a park is that is brings the services to the vets instead of them having to go to the VA. Adams said he expects more than 400 vets to show up throughout the day.

The group's request to stage the event was approved by the Dallas City Council on July 20.
