INDEPENDENCE -- Spirit Mountain Community Fund recently awarded a $31,000 grant to an organization seeking to construct a fully handicap accessible playground in Riverview Park.

Sarah Ramirez of the Independence Riverview Community Playground (ICRP) committee said her group needs about $275,000 to pay for equipment, land grading, play surface installation and other expenses for a proposed 5,400-square-foot playground.

The Spirit Mountain grant puts ICRP at about $44,303. Ramirez said she needs another $23,000 to purchase the actual equipment.

IRCP has about $5,000 in in-kind donations from local businesses. Ramirez said she is also applying for grants with the Ford Family Foundations, the Meyer Foundation and Home Depot.

The hope is to secure enough funding to start and finish the project this year, she said.
