DALLAS -- The 2008-09 Battle of the Books goes to Whitworth.
In the Dallas School District Battle of the Books competition, a team of fifth-graders from Whitworth Elementary gave its school bragging rights for the year with its winning performance.
"This has been an ongoing tradition in the elementary schools," said Lynda Johnston, a Whitworth teacher and librarian.
For about 18 years, teams of students read books and answered questions to win.
Johnston said 25 to 30 teams at each of the Dallas elementary schools -- Lyle, Oakdale Heights and Whitworth -- read 16 books beginning in September. Teams in third, fourth and fifth grades competed against one another within their school, and the winning team from each competed in the district competition held Friday, March 6, at Lyle.
Johnston said Superintendent Christy Perry asked comprehensive questions and competitors buzzed in answers.
"They really had to work at it -- it wasn't simple," Johnston said.
This year, the winners are fifth-grade students Everett Minahan, Cordon Rosenbalm, Jordan Williams and Nick Gannaway from Whitworth.
