INDEPENDENCE -- A mural was dedicated at Independence Elementary School on Tuesday in memory of a local student who drowned last November.

The mural inside the school foyer, which depicts a circus theme and a message about respecting and empathizing with others, includes a photo of Michael Runyon, 8.

The IES third-grader and his older brother, 20-year-old Alvin Troub of Independence, died Nov. 16 after falling into the Willamette River during a fishing trip at Riverview Park.

Students, faculty, staff and family members of the deceased were on hand for an unveiling of the mural Tuesday morning after a student assembly.

"For some people, this will be another way to deal with that loss," said Principal Steve Tillery. "And maybe bring closure to those feelings."

Photographs of and a more detailed story about the mural and the dedication will appear in next week's edition of the Itemizer-Observer.
