POLK COUNTY -- A series of workshops designed for small acreage landowners have been scheduled by the Polk Soil & Water Conservation District.
The "Living on the Land" series includes four workshops, with the first set for Wednesday, June 3, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Topic, dates and times include:
* "Hobby Farm Animal Basics," Wednesday, June 3, 6 to 8 p.m. -- Learn the ins-and-outs of hobby farming, including what's involved in raising and keeping chickens, sheep, horses and other farm animals.
* "Managing Your Land," Wednesday, June 10, 6 to 8 p.m. -- What do you need to start a vineyard? How do you manage a small woodlot? Learn about these and Polk County deferrals and regulations before you change your land usage.
* "Gardening and Landscaping," Wednesday, June 17, 6 to 8 p.m. -- Learn some tricks to effectively landscape your land and grow your own fresh vegetables. Free soil testing kits will be available.
* "Water 101," Thursday, June 18, 6 to 8 p.m. -- Learn about wells, septic systems, and pond maintenance. Well water sample testing will be available (water must be in a sterilized, unlabeled jar).
All workshops will be held at the Polk County Fairgrounds, 520 S. Pacific Highway (99W), Rickreall. Cost to attend is $3 per person or $5 for two people. RSVP at least two days in advance of each session is requested.
