Two people, ages 19 and 11, died when ejected from a car that rolled on Highway 22.

POLK COUNTY -- A man and child died, and four others were injured, in a single-car accident on Highway 22 near Dallas on Sunday.

The driver, Jose Ruben Pacheco Medina, 19, and Geobanny Esparza, 11, who was sitting in the backseat, weren't wearing seatbelts when the incident occurred at about 4:45 a.m. near milepost 14, Oregon State Police said.

Medina was driving five passengers eastbound on Highway 22 when his 2003 Dodge Neon drifted onto the shoulder for about 200 yards, OSP said.

Medina, who didn't have a valid driver's license, attempted to steer back onto the roadway and lost control. The car rolled five times before coming to rest on its wheels on the shoulder.

Medina and Esparza were ejected and pronounced dead at the scene, OSP said.

A 4-month old male infant, Erick Medina, sitting in an unbuckled car seat was also ejected. He was transported to Legacy Emanuel Hospital

in Portland

with critical injuries.

Another unrestrained passenger, Brandon Esparza, 14, was transported to West Valley Hospital in Dallas with non-life threatening injuries.

Jonathan Esparza, 11, Geobanny's twin, was taken to Salem Hospital and then Legacy with critical injuries.

The children's mother, Cuzana Rubio Ruiz, 38, of McMinnville, was using safety restraints and was treated for minor injuries at Salem Hospital.

Family members said Erick Medina is Jose Medina and Ruiz's son, OSP said.

The accident is under investigation. Wet pavement and alcohol may have been contributing factors, OSP said.
