NEWPORT -- Two men, including one from Dallas, were killed after a boating accident on Aug. 25 off the coast of Newport.
Two U.S. Coast Guard crews were called out at about 1:40 p.m. to a report of a 19-foot recreational boat in trouble in the water near Nye Beach, according to a Coast Guard press release.
A beach crew and rescue swimmer found one of the two men who had been on the boat and pulled him from the surf shortly after arriving on scene. About 30 minutes later, a helicopter crew out of Coast Guard Air Station North Bend spotted the other man. He also was taken from the water by a rescue swimmer.
Both men were unresponsive when recovered by rescuers, the release said. They were transported to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport, but emergency workers were unable to revive them.
According to the Newport Police, the men were identified as Allen F. Howard, 67, of Dallas, and Jerry W. Howard, 58, of Amity.
Members of the Newport Fire Department and Police Department helped with the search and rescue effort.
Newport Fire Chief Rick Crook, who had been part of the rescue team, said conditions were hazy and visibility was limited from the beach that day, but he didn't know if that had been a factor in the incident.
