DALLAS -- Serving Our Veterans at Home, a veterans' service group based in the Salem area, will be hosting a one-day veterans' stand-down event at Dallas City Park on Saturday, Sept. 19.
Stand-downs help the Department of Veterans Affairs offer food, shelter, clothing, health screenings, VA and Social Security benefits and referrals to other services to vets.
The event will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Event organizers still are in need of tables and chairs and volunteers who are veterans themselves to help vets find the help they need at the stand-down. Organizer Wayne Crowder hopes to see as many as 400 vets show up in the park.
Crowder said the mission of the stand-down is to offer hope, safety and community to homeless and troubled veterans who have given up on being part of society. Offering vets a connection back into society is the first step in healing, he said.
