Dallas plans pedestrian safety crossing operation

DALLAS -- The Dallas Police Department will conduct its final pedestrian safety operation of 2009 on Friday, Sept. 11.

DALLAS -- The Dallas Police Department will conduct its final pedestrian safety operation of 2009 on Friday, Sept. 11.

The operation is scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon at the intersection of Southeast LaCreole Drive and Academy Street.

Signs will be posted at the intersection the day prior to the event to remind motorists.

Oregon's "stop and stay stopped law" requires motorists to stop and remain stopped for a pedestrian in a crosswalk -- both marked and unmarked. The motorist must remain stopped until the pedestrian has cleared the lane in which they are traveling (or into which you are turning) and the next lane.

Oregon law also prohibits drivers from passing another vehicle stopped at a crosswalk.

Violation of Oregon's pedestrian laws is a Class B traffic infraction and carries a $242 fine.
