BUENA VISTA -- The Buena Vista Ferry will be closed for the remainder of its season starting Monday, Aug. 16, to begin work on the ferry's replacement project.
Senior Ferry Operator Ed Watson said preliminary work has begun, but construction on the river crossing connecting Polk and Marion counties will begin in late August or early September.
The goal is to have the work complete before the normal season opening in spring 2011. The ferry typically runs from mid-April through October.
The new ferry will run on shore-based electrical power, be able to handle a longer season and carry six cars instead of four.
