POLK COUNTY -- The deadline is fast approaching for individuals planning to file their candidacy to run for mayor or city council in Polk County's four incorporated cities.
Tuesday, Aug. 24, is the final day would-be candidates can submit applications in order to qualify for the November general election.
In Dallas, the mayor's position currently held by Jim Fairchild and four seats held by councilors Warren Lamb, Jackie Lawson, David Shein and Ken Woods Jr. are up for election this fall.
Currently held by Darrin Fleener, the mayor's position in Falls City is up for election, as are three positions on the city council. Those seats are now held by John Volkmann, Bruce Garrett and Willy Lowman.
The mayor's seat, currently held by John McArdle, and three council seats are up for election in Independence. The council seats are Positions 1, 2 and 4 -- currently held by Diana Lindskog, Marilyn Morton and Tom Takacs, respectively.
Five at-large Monmouth City Council seats will be up for grabs -- three four-year terms and two two-year terms.
The four-year terms are currently held by Ben Meyer, Darrin Silbernagel and Steve Milligan. Jon Carey holds one of the two-year terms; the other was recently vacated by Kathy Fultz.
The mayoral position, a two-year term held currently held by John Oberst, is also up for election this fall.
Candidates must be a registered voter in Oregon and have lived in the city they wish to represent continuously for the 12 months preceding the election, except for in Falls City, where candidates are required to have been a city resident for three months before the election.

Councilors are elected to four-year terms and the mayor to a two-year term in Dallas, Falls City and Independence.
In Monmouth this year, three of the seats are for the normal four-year terms. The other two seats to be filled have two years remaining on the terms.
