INDEPENDENCE -- Independence Police Department will conduct a crosswalk compliance check on Friday, June 18, from noon to 4 p.m.
Officers will be checking several locations throughout the city that have marked crosswalks. A decoy officer will cross at these locations to determine whether motorists yield the right of way.
This mission will be the first of four to take place during the summer and into the beginning of the 2010-11 school year.
Violation of Oregon's pedestrian laws is a Class B traffic infraction and carries a $242 fine.
Independence Police received a grant from the Alliance for Community Traffic Safety in Oregon (ACTS Oregon) to conduct these traffic operations.
