MONMOUTH -- Monmouth police arrested a Salem man following a burglary of a home on June 19 in which one of the occupants was assaulted.
Officers responded to a call at 9:17 p.m. at a residence in the 200 block of North Stadium Drive. Kyle Damon Kearl, 23, allegedly had entered the house through an unlocked door and was confronted by a woman living there.
Sgt. Kim Dorn said Kearl physically assaulted the woman. Her husband, who heard her screams for helps, ended up scuffling with Kearl and pushed him out the door before calling 9-1-1.
Officers identified Kearl as the suspect because of items he dropped and left behind at the victims' home. A special response team of agencies throughout Polk County found Kearl at an acquaintance's duplex about a block away from the reported burglary, Dorn said.
Kearl surrendered at about 1:30 a.m. on June 20 to police after he and other people in the duplex were ordered out over a public address system.
Kearl was charged with burglary I, assault II, menacing, and criminal trespassing.
