INDEPENDENCE -- A drunk driver attempting to flee officers ended up crashing into residential property and an Independence Public Works building on Oct. 5.

Police responded to reports of an accident at about 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of South Main and G streets.

Officer Tino Banuelos said Julio Camacho, 20, of Independence had turned onto G Street, attempted to pass another vehicle, then overcorrected the red pickup he was driving into an alley to the north.

During the incident, Camacho knocked over a street sign, hit fences on private properties then crashed into the east side of a public works shop, Banuelos said.

Camacho then exited the vehicle and fled on foot to a nearby home and was found hiding in a driveway, he said.

Camacho was charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants, failing to perform the duties a driver when property is damaged, attempting to elude officers and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
