INDEPENDENCE -- Central continued to tread water in Oregon West Conference volleyball play last week by splitting a pair of home matches.
The Lady Panthers lost to league-leading Newport 25-16, 22-25, 25-14, 25-23 Oct. 12 and defeated Philomath 25-18, 13-25, 25-17, 25-19.
Central (6-10 overall, 3-3 OWC) is in fourth place in the conference with four games remaining. The top four teams in each league advance to the play-in round of the playoffs.
"It was kind of the same thing," Central coach Claudine Mendazona said. "It's kind of up and down for us right now. Newport's a good team. We just didn't take care of the ball. We had too many unforced errors. Our serve-receive was not very good. We're just not putting the ball away."
The good news for Central is that Emily Kenyon returned from her ankle injury against Newport and was back at full strength for the Philomath match.
Kenyon had 26 assists against Newport and came back with 22 against Philomath.
Shallyn Lewis continued her strong play for the Lady Panthers. She had a team-high 12 kills against Newport and added 10 kills, 14 digs and three blocks against Philomath.
Allison Bansen had 10 digs against Newport and totaled three aces, eight kills and eight digs against Philomath.
Juli Peters had three blocks against Newport, and Linzi Wallace finished with six kills and nine digs in the win against Philomath.
